At the end of the 15th century, the minstrel Gilles and his friend Dominique mysteriously appear at the castle of Baron Hugues while his daughter Anne's engagement party is being held. They are emissaries of the devil and their malevolent mission is to sow confusion through seduction. But when he fails to comply with his orders, the devil himself comes furiously to the castle to impose his wishes. Filmed in the years of the Nazi occupation of France and seen by many as an allegory about the population's resistance against the German invader, the film transports us to a magical and poetic medieval era. Directed by Marcel Carné (“Awakening of the Day”), Oscar® nominee Jacques Prévert (“The Wharf of Mist”) collaborated on its script. Starring Arletty (“The Children of Paradise”), Marie Déa (“Orfeo”), Fernand Ledoux (“The Human Beast”) and Alain Cuny (“La Dolce Vita”).
