A Basque shepherd reluctantly accepts the mission of passing to Spain, from occupied France and through the Pyrenees, to a famous man of science named John Bergson. The Basque is unaware that his wife and two children are accompanying the scientist. The wife is ill, and neither she nor the children seem to be in a position to successfully overcome the difficult test that her escape will mean.
