Bergman explains the story of Karin, daughter of King Töre and Queen Mareta. Like every summer, a maiden must make the offering of the candles at the altar of the Virgin. King Töre sends Karin accompanied by Ingrid, a girl sheltered in Töre's house who secretly hates Karin. Before crossing the forest, Ingrid stops and leaves Karin alone. Karin continues on her way, meeting some shepherds, apparently friendly, who invite her to share their food. Trusting, she sits with them but during the meal they savagely attack her, raping and murdering her. Ingrid witnesses the scene from her hiding place. Töre, upon learning what happened, takes revenge by killing the Pasotres and when he lifts his daughter's body from the place where she lies dead, a spring of pure water springs up.
