The Bamboo Blonde [DVD]

The Second World War is the background of this light musical narrated through flashbacks. The head of the multinational cosmetics company 'The Bamboo Blonde' is interviewed about his beginnings and will tell a long story about a nightclub located in Manhattan that he ran during the war. There, a war bomber pilot, Patrick Ransom, met showgirl Louise Anderson after his girlfriend jilted him. After a night of true love between them, he is sent to fight against the Japanese fleet in the Pacific. His impressed squad, after seeing him with the blonde showgirl, has painted the girl's figure on the planes. Her name and image, The Bamboo Blonde, brings luck to the squadron of pilots, resulting in winners of multiple aerial battles. When Ransom returns to New York he wants to see his blonde muse again, even though his fiancée (a Jane Greer who would immediately later film Back in Time) is waiting to marry him. Directed by the restless Anthony Mann, best known for directing westerns and war films, this propaganda musical comedy describes a portrait of a time where some died and fought on the front while others became rich thanks to circumstances.
