A violinist at the Paris Opera (Claude Rains), madly in love with Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster), a young aspiring soprano, is fired because his left hand is no longer as skilled as before. Alone and without money, after having spent everything to pay - without her knowledge - for Christine's singing lessons, he decides to publish a concert in order to complete the soprano's instruction and become famous. But, due to a misunderstanding, he attacks his editor, and his secretary disfigures his face with acid. He then takes refuge in the basement of the Opera and, since then, acts like a ghost whose threatening shadow lurks in the darkness and spreads panic among the public.
