Once the novel is finished it is rejected, publisher after publisher. Failure plunges him into a deep depression and he turns to drink. Despite the fact that his wife tries to help him from party to party and the marriage begins to falter. One drunken night, the woman is left outside the house, unable to enter and enduring a terrible storm. As a result, he catches pneumonia and dies. Jonson returns to America, gives up drinking and becomes a novelist. He returns to Paris to recover his daughter...
