Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) is a white, liberal journalist who begins to follow the activities of Stephen Biko (Denzel Washington), a black anti-apartheid activist, at a key moment in South Africa's history. Donald meets Stephen and they become friends until he is brutally murdered in 1977, at the hands of the police.
