German author Carl Zuckermeyer's famous post-war play, based on the life of the famous German flying ace Ernst Udet, was adapted for the screen by Helmut Käutner, starring Curd Jürgens. The film tells the misadventures of Harry Harras, a brave Luftwaffe general who loves his job although he can barely tolerate the Nazi regime that has taken control in Germany. Disgusted by the atrocities that occur during the war, Harras resigns his position and as a result is imprisoned and tortured. Once free, in spite of his torturers, Harras takes a fugitive Jewish family under his protection.
