Berlin, Saturday, November 3, 1923. The Germans are living through very difficult times, prisoners of terror, hunger and despair. Abel Rosenberg, an American (David Carradine), returns at dusk to the boarding house he rents with his brother Max and there finds him shot dead. Like Abel, Max was a circus acrobat who, together with Manuela (Liv Ullman), his wife, had formed a trapeze trio. Until Max, injured in the arm, has to leave the show. For him, the circus is over and Manuela has separated.
