Paul Kersey is a famous architect who lives with his wife Joanna in New York City. One day some criminals follow his wife and daughter Carol to their apartment. There they beat Joanna to death and rape Carol, who barely survives. Traumatized by the brutal attack, Carol remains in a psychiatric hospital in a catatonic state.
