June 1940. Hundreds of French people, including little Paulette and her parents, head in a desperate exodus towards the south of France. Nazi planes fly over this crowd, mercilessly bombing the road. Paulette's parents and their dog are killed during the attack. Someone throws the animal's carcass into the river and the girl, unable to separate herself from her dog, decides to follow him, which leads to her meeting with Michel, an eleven-year-old boy, the son of some farmers who live in the area.
