After the death of King Svyatoslav I at the end of the 10th century, the threat of civil war loomed over Kievan Rus'. Svyatoslav had appointed the eldest son Yarolpolk as ruler of kyiv and Vladimir, the youngest and bastard son, had given him the government of Novgorod. But upon his death a bloody war breaks out between the two legitimate sons, Yarolpolk and Oleg, regent of Drevlinia. Oleg's murder forces Vladimir into exile, fleeing across the frozen sea. Vladimir, ready to recover Novgorod, recruits an army of Varangians, Nordic Vikings, to defeat Yarolpolk and thus, with the sum of both armies, confront the Byzantine army.
