The Road to Guantánamo is the story of four British friends who in September 2001 traveled from Tipton, in the English Midlands, to attend the wedding of one of them and, incidentally, enjoy a holiday in Pakistan. It took two and a half years to return home. Their journey took them from Tipton to Karachi, Kandahar, Kabul and Kunduz, where they were captured by the Northern Alliance (made up of different factions of armed groups united by the objective of overthrowing the Taliban regime) and then passed into the hands of the Americans, who took them to Kandahar. From there, three of them (Shafiq, 23 years old; Asif and Ruhel, both 19 years old) were transferred to the North American base at Guantánamo, in Cuba, where they remained prisoners for more than two years, subjected to countless humiliations and torture. On March 5, 2004 they were transferred to the United Kingdom. In London, after being questioned, they were released without charge.
