Captain Josiah Newman (Gregory Peck) is the head of the psychiatric unit at an army base during the final days of World War II. The captain wants his patients to recover, but tries not to send them back to the battlefield, where he believes they will meet certain death. Three patients particularly concern Captain Newman: Colonel Bliss (Eddie Albert) who suffers from a guilt complex for all the men he has sent to their deaths; Corporal Tompkins (Bobby Darin), a man decorated for his bravery in battle, with a great sense of guilt over a death; and, finally, Captain Winston (Robert Duvall), who feels guilty and has fallen into a catatonic state after having been hidden for more than a year in the basement of a building in Germany.
