In 1941, Polish priest Maximilian Kolbe was arrested by the Nazis. He would be confined in the Auschwitz concentration camp. On the occasion of a prisoner escape, the Nazis chose several men at random to be executed and discourage further escapes. When one of the prisoners chosen, father of a family, begged for his life thinking of his own, Kolbe volunteered to replace that man. John Paul II canonized Kolbe in 1982, proposing him as a martyr of charity.
