Johnny and Tanner live their childhood in a world of extreme violence: every day they watch how their father brutally mistreats their mother in a home destroyed by drugs and alcohol. During one of these beatings, one of the brothers, overcome by nerves, shoots his father, killing him. After the patricide, Tanner will bear all the blame and will spend the rest of his childhood in a reformatory learning the horrors of prison, while Johnny, the youngest, will be adopted by a traditional middle-class family. Fifteen years later, both brothers meet again. Both are now very different. However, Tanner wants to go to California to finish resolving his legal situation and asks Johnny to accompany him. Despite their differences and the fact that they must cross the country with only 12 dollars in their pockets, they will begin the trip that will completely change their lives.
