After a failed robbery of a city bank, small-time criminal Jimmy Hands is sentenced to prison. Faced with the unpromising idea of spending twelve years there, Jimmy sees an opportunity to escape if the Occupational Therapy Unit would put on a musical in the old chapel, the least secure part of the prison. To this end, he promotes the staging of a play written by the prison director, Mortimer, a musical enthusiast.
