1943. The great battle of Stalingrad has ended. Battalions of German prisoners are taken by Soviet troops to concentration camps. Military doctor Fritz Böhler arrives at one of these camps, 5110/47, together with Dr. Sellnow and Corporal Pelz. Soon Dr. Böhler sets up an infirmary in the demolished church next to the barracks. Böhler cannot forget his Hippocratic oath and breaks all the camp rules to be able to operate on Ensign Schultheiss for peritonitis, despite not having medication or the appropriate utensil. The doctor and his team, in addition to robbery, can be accused of murder if the ensign dies.
