It is not easy for Alex Gromberg (Michael Douglas) to play the delicate role of father, son and husband. He tries to avoid his father's mistakes and accept the ones he has already made with his children. His wife (Bernadette Peters) is a psychologist trying to find a balance between professional and family life. Mitchell Gromberg (Kirk Douglas), the grandfather, is a prestigious retired New York lawyer. His wife Evelyn (Diana Douglas) is the devoted wife who has always served as moral support and has softened the conflictive relationship between Alex and his father. Asher Gromberg (Cameron Douglas), Alex's eldest son. He is a rather irresponsible young man. Eli (Rory Culkin), the eleven-year-old son, is the most mature of the men in the Gromberg family. Three generations of an American family, each of which lives on its own terms.
