Shadows of Time takes us to a carpet-making workshop near Calcutta, in India, before independence. For Ravi and Masha, who are forced to work as child laborers, it is the beginning of a tragic love story. Aware that money makes the difference between being free or a slave, the ambitious and determined Ravi strives to promote himself from the status of a simple worker to the position of the best carpet weaver, and this with a single purpose: to leave the workshop. However, when the boy finds out that the workshop director intends to sell Masha to a pimp, Ravi uses all his savings to buy Masha's freedom. Before leaving, the girl promises to wait for him at the largest Shiva temple in Calcutta every night of the full moon. Years later, the young man leaves the workshop to go to the temple. Masha, who has become a sought-after dancer in a local brothel, also heads to the sacred precinct in the hope of seeing Ravi arrive. But fate seems to conspire against the idyll of the two young people.
