Adaptation of the famous novel by Ernest Hemingway that tells the story of Santiago (Spencer Tracy), an old widowed sea dog without children who is going through a bad streak: he has not been able to catch a single fish for 84 days. All the town's inhabitants make fun of him, except for a boy (Felipe Pazos), who waits for him every day on the pontoon and helps him pick up his fishing gear. They both decide that the next day will be good for swordfish fishing and Santiago goes fishing on day 85 determined to catch the biggest fish he has ever caught. It is still night when he gets up, prepares the rigging and sets out to sea with his small boat. On the high seas, the old man puts various baits. Suddenly his luck is going to change. There is no land in sight. Now, out to sea, the old man holds on his line the biggest fish he had ever seen.
