After the death of his father in combat, Balam (George Chakiris) becomes king of the Mayans. His first action as king is to lead his people to a coastal region, outside of Mexico, to avoid the same enemies that killed his father. But their new home is located in the territory of a hostile tribe. Their boss, 'Black Eagle' (Yul Brynner), carries out a violent raid against the Mayan camp, and Balam is seriously injured.
