The Russian Grand Duke Dimitri Vassilovich Orlovski, a part-time member of the clergy and an accomplished full-time thief and conman, is in revolutionary Mexico to locate a great treasure hidden in the Piedras Negras region and of whose existence he has reliable news. A bandit named Lozoya has the key to locating the treasure, but he has the disadvantage of being locked up in the Yuma prison. Orlovski tries to convince him to participate in the search before they are both hanged by the neck with a rope. At the last moment they are saved by Mary O'Donnell, a radical Irish journalist willing to start, single-handedly, a peasant revolt. The three undertake a risky search for gold for which each of them has a very different goal in mind.
