During the difficult years of the Great Depression in the United States, millions of men went hungry. Among these are Sonny and Charlie. The latter is a fighter without a job for having refused to lose a fight. Sonny is a cheerful wanderer, dreamer and fantasist, convinced that the best way to get out of trouble is to join a prosperous gangster gang. Fate makes these two losers become friends and manage to join Angelo's gang. They begin their job as supervisors at Angelo's nightclub. But after an altercation at the club, Angelo decides they're too "tough" for this job and sends them to the miserable neighborhood called ?Little Italy? to collect the “protection” tax. Charlie and Sonny arrive ready to tear up the bad payers? but they are immediately moved by the misery of the poor merchants.
