Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe merchant in Victorian England in the year 1890. Happily widowed, his life is summarized in getting drunk at his Freemason meetings while his three daughters Maggie, Alice and Vicky take care of his shoe shop. . His bad character and sexist habits make him think that he went from being dominated by one woman, his deceased wife, to being dominated by three, his daughters, so he decides to marry Vicky and Alice to get rid of them. He has other plans for Maggie: leave her single and force her to run his shoe store, since, without a doubt, Maggie proves to be the most intelligent of the three. But Maggie, already tired of her father's character, decides to devise a plan to be the one to take the reins of her life and change the destiny that her despotic father intends to impose on her... Magnificent comedy based on a play by Harold Brighouse and directed by David Lean, who managed to create another of his numerous masterpieces. The performances of the leading trio formed by Charles Laughton, John Mills and Brenda de Banzie also stand out. Winner of the Berin Golden Bear in 1954 and Winner of the BAFTA Award for Best English Film in 1955.
