After the Civil War, dangerous bandits like the James brothers (Lawrence Tierney and Tom Tyler) and the Younger brothers (Jack Buetel, Bruce Cabot, Robert J. Wilke and John Cliff) are part of a conflictive group of rebels called the Men of Quantell. Jeff Clanton (Robert Ryan), a major in the Union army, convinces them to put down their weapons, leave the fights and conflicts to accept and swear to the Constitution.
