Epic story about family, faith, power and oil that takes place on the California border at the end of the 19th century during the oil boom. The film chronicles the life and times of Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), who goes from being a miserable miner who has to raise only one child, to an oil magnate. One day Plainview gets a mysterious tip about a town to the west where a sea of oil is seeping outwards, and there he heads with his son HW (Dillon Freasier) to try their luck in dusty Little Boston. In this miserable town, where the only fun possible revolves around the church led by the charismatic preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), Plainview and HW take their lucky break. But now that fortune begins to smile on them, nothing will be the same again: conflicts arise and all human values - love, hope, community, faith, ambition and even the bond between father and son - are exposed to corruption, disappointment and the flow of oil.
