China 1938. After graduating from Oxford, a young Englishman named George Hogg arrives in Shanghai when the country is being conquered by Japanese troops. Passionate about adventures, he decides to witness the war after having gotten a job as a journalist. Captured by troops, Hogg manages to save himself thanks to a leader of the Chinese resistance, Jack Chen (Chow Yun Fat) and, in his escape, takes refuge in the Huang Shi orphanage.
