China 1938. After graduating from Oxford, a young Englishman named George Hogg arrives in Shanghai when the country is being conquered by Japanese troops. Passionate about adventures, he decides to witness the war after having gotten a job as a journalist. Captured by troops, Hogg manages to save himself thanks to a leader of the Chinese resistance, Jack Chen (Chow Yun Fat) and, in his escape, takes refuge in the Huang Shi orphanage. Pressured by the ever-closer Japanese army, Hogg tries to save the sixty children from the orphanage by embarking on a journey through mountains and deserts, accompanied by Jack and an American nurse (Radha Mitchell). Along the way they will discover the true meaning of love, responsibility and courage.
