Cuando Quoyle, un solitario y desventurado habitante de Nueva York, pierde a su ex esposa en un accidente de coche, su vida cambia para siempre. Abatido por el dolor y la nostalgia, se retira junto a su tía y a su joven hija a Terranova, el misterioso hogar de sus ancestros. En el pequeño pueblo pesquero Killick-Claw, Quoyle consigue un trabajo como reportero en el periódico local. Con cada artículo que escribe, se acentúa en su percepción de esta peculiar comunida, junto a la propia percepción de sí mismo. De forma gradual, iniciará un romance con Wayne, una mujer que vive con sus propios demonios personales. Mientras empieza su nueva vida en Terranova, su pasado se funde con su presente y Quoyle se tranforma.
