Year 1846. John Riley (TOM BERENGER) is an American army officer in command of a platoon made up of Irish immigrants despised by everyone. One day they desert and flee to Mexico. Here they are assaulted and taken prisoner by a band of guerrillas, led by Cortina (JOAQUIM DE ALMEDIA), opposed to the government.
Shortly after, Riley and his men are offered the chance to join Mexican troops in the war against the invader, the United States. Thus, the San Patricio battalion was born, under its own banner.
