The years of combat have taken their toll on John Rambo who, in search of inner peace, has retired to a Buddhist monastery in Thailand. Colonel Sam Trautman manages to locate him and asks him to participate in a top secret mission in Afghanistan to help rebels fighting the Soviet invaders. Rambo does not wish to leave his shelter, so Trautman undertakes the mission without any other help.
The war machine that Rambo had become in the past is activated again when he learns that Trautman has been captured and tortured by Soviet commander Zaysen.
As in the two previous installments, Jerry Goldsmith composed an extraordinary soundtrack awarded by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) as one of the best of the year.
