Reiko is a war widow who runs a small family business that is in decline. Because of her situation, her sisters-in-law pressure her to remarry. Meanwhile, her brother-in-law comes to help her. Mikio Naruse (The Voice from the Mountain, Mother) shows us the image of the daughter-in-law oppressed by her husband's family, a recurring theme in Japanese melodrama. But he decides to give the conventional moral structure a twist by having Reiko and her brother-in-law live a love story.
