Things are not going well for Tyrone "Pinetop" Purvis, owner of the Honeydripper bar; He has debts and competition from Touissant, owner of the bar across the street. He decides to risk it all and hires the famous Guitar Sam to perform one night, but when he goes to pick him up, Guitar Sam doesn't show up. Tyrone convinces the sheriff to release a young guitarist, Sony , who claims to play as well as Guitar Sam. When Sonny takes the stage and attacks his first guitar solo, Tyrone will know if the Honeydripper's lights have gone out forever or if his luck has changed forever.
HONEYDRIPPER, a musical drama starring Dani Glover, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Yaya DaCosta, Charles S. Dutton and Gary Clark Jr. among others, is a story of transformations; a second chance for an old blues musician, the brilliant takeoff of a young guitarist, and the rise of rock and roll itself.
Honeydripper is the sixteenth film by John Sales, and the thirteenth produced by Maggie Renzi, his eternal collaborator. It was filmed in Greenville, Georgiana, Anniston and Midway, four locations in southern Alabama ideal for recreating the deep south of the 1950s. It included the participation of the inhabitants of these towns and part of the members of the "New Beginnings Ministry" choir from Greenville, as well as musicians of the stature of Keb'Mo', Dr. Mable John and Eddie Shaw.
