US Navy pilots BEN GANNON (Josh Lucas), KARA WADE (Jessica Biel) and HENRY PURCELL (Oscar winner Jamie Foxx) are part of an elite division of test pilots who fly fighter jets. top-secret invisibles, known only as Talons.

They are the best of the best, and they know it. Their chief officer, Captain George Cummings (Sam Shepard) introduces the team to their new partner: an AI VACN (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) nicknamed "EDI."

Although Ben has reservations about "removing human pilots from the war equation," Cummings orders the team on their first real mission alongside "EDI." To their surprise, he turns out to be an incredible pilot and they successfully destroy their target. But on the trip back to base aboard the aircraft carrier USS CARL VINSON, lightning strikes "EDI." The artificial brain expands in ways its creators could never have predicted. Despite Ben and Henry's reservations, Cummings declares "EDI" ready to rejoin the on-air team.

On the next mission against a nuclear-armed warlord in a remote Chinese province, problems with the damaged "EDI" circuits worsen. Ben decides that the risks of the attack outweigh the benefits for him, Henry, and Kara, to whom he has begun to feel attracted. When he aborts the mission, "EDI" disobeys orders and destroys the target anyway. The danger increases when "EDI" decides to execute a top-secret mission that, if successful, could trigger nuclear Armageddon. And only Ben can stop it.
