Johnny Boz, former rock idol and nightclub owner, is found murdered in his own bed in San Francisco. Police inspector Nick Curran, who has overcome alcoholism and drug addiction problems, must take charge of the case. The main suspect is Catherine Tramell, an attractive and manipulative novelist who had recently dated Boz. Police psychiatrist Beth Gardner, Nick's ex-girlfriend, begins to collaborate in the investigation when it is discovered that the murderer was inspired by one of Catherine's novels. Nick ends up getting too involved in the case, in which everyone seems to be a suspect.
