For more than 12 years, Rodolfo and Petrita have had a forced courtship. Forced because during all that time they have not been able to get married, waiting for the moment when they can have their own home and thus leave their respective sublet rooms. Their limited economic resources do not allow them to take the leap to become independent and begin the long-awaited life together. Rodolfo occupies a room in the apartment of Doña Martina, an elderly woman who lives in a dilapidated building in the center of Madrid whose owner hopes to demolish it and build modern apartments. Although there are other tenants in Doña Martina's apartment - a podiatrist and a young woman with a busy social life - Rodolfo is the old woman's favorite. Doña Martina's health seems to be getting worse day by day and under pressure from his eternal girlfriend Petra, Rodolfo agrees to marry Doña Martina in order to inherit her advantageous rental contract. To everyone's surprise, Doña Martina recovers her health, her energy and her vitality after the wedding.
