Joel McCrea plays a ranch hand who risks losing his best friend and the woman he loves when he is forced into a confrontation with ruthless rustlers. When Molly Wood (Barbara Britton), a well-educated lady, arrives from the East to a small Wyoming town to be the new schoolteacher, the Virginian (McCrea) and his best friend Go, Steve (Sonny Tufts), meet. They are immediately attracted to her and compete for her love. Hoping to make quick money and against his friend's warnings, Steve joins the gang of the corrupt Trampas (Brian Donlevy) and is caught stealing cattle.

The Virginian must choose between his friendship and upholding the strict laws of the West.

When, chasing the cruel gang leader, he is shot, he risks losing Molly, tormented by the dilemma of fleeing "the lawlessness of the West" or staying for the love of her cowboy.
