Ashes and Diamonds (Polish: Popiół i diament) is a Polish film, released in 1958 and directed by Andrzej Wajda, based on the 1948 novel of the same name by Jerzy Andrzejewski. With this film, Wajda completed his war trilogy, which previously included Pokolenie (Generation, 1955) and Kanal (1957). Plot: On May 8, 1945, in some small Polish town, the day Germany officially surrendered, Maciek (Zbigniew Cybulski) and Andrzej (Adam Pawlikowski), two soldiers of the Armia Krajowa, the Home Army, must assassinate to communist commissar Szczuka, but they fail, killing two civilians, factory workers. They are given a second chance at the town's hotel and banquet hall, Monopol. Meanwhile, a party is being organized in honor of the appointment of a minor minister, and mayor of the town, by his assistant, Drewnowski (Bogumił Kobiela). This is in fact a double agent, present in the previous failed attempt to assassinate the communist commissar. Maciek gets a room next to his target after dazzling the receptionist by talking about Warsaw, their hometown. While he and Andrzej wait to complete their mission, he falls in love with the hotel maid, Krystyna (Ewa Krzyżewska). Given this, their ideals and convictions are put to the test in the hope of a better future.
