Cold Mountain recorre los caminos entrelazados de tres personas desarraigadas por culpa de la guerra, tres personas cuya supervivencia física y espiritual termina dependiendo de las otras dos. En primer lugar, está el soldado confederado Inman (Jude Law) que resulta herido en una batalla y lucha para regresar a su hogar y a la mujer que ama, aunque tenga que atravesar todo un país en guerra. Una alegre trotamundos de nombre Ruby (Renee Zellweger) acude al rescate de Ada y se convierte en otro factor clave de la historia.
