Around 1930, in a small town in western Jutland, lives the old farmer Morten Borgen. He has three sons: Mikkel, Johannes and Anders. The first is married to Inger, has two young daughters and is awaiting the birth of his third child. Johannnes is a former Theology student who, because he has been imbued with Kierkegaard's ideas and identifies with the figure of Jesus Christ, is considered by everyone to be crazy. The third, Anders, is in love with the tailor's daughter, the intransigent leader of a rival religious sector.
