In the summer of 1694, Mr. Neville, a promising and ambitious draftsman, visits the estates of the landowner Mr. Herbert of Compton Anstey Witshire. Overcoming initial reservations, since his capacity for flattery is only surpassed by his boastful claim to draw the truth, Mr. Neville receives a commission, but not from the landowner but from his wife. A contract is signed and in exchange for twelve drawings of the house with the moat and manicured gardens, Mr. Neville convinces Mrs. Herbert to give him free rein to enjoy her most intimate hospitality.
