The illegitimate son of the Marquis of Ariza, he was promoted by the Count-Duke of Olivares. He became archbishop of Puebla de los Ángeles, which owes him its splendid cathedral and the rise of faith. He was also viceroy and captain general of New Spain, writer, promoter of the arts, poet, jurist and defender of the Indians. Persecuted and slandered, his life seems like an adventure novel. It ends with the intervention of King Philip IV who orders him to return to Spain, where he ended his days as bishop of Burgo de Osma.
