The Landless Movement is probably the most important social organization in the world. Emerged 20 years ago during the military dictatorship in Brazil, the MST brings together those excluded from Brazilian society both in the countryside and in the cities. According to the United Nations, Brazil is at the top of the countries with the worst distribution of land and wealth. 50% of the arable land in Brazil is in the hands of 1% of the population; thus creating millions of families without land and without a future who crowd into favelas surrounded by poverty and violence. The Landless Movement proposes a “reconquest” of the countryside from which they were expelled and the creation of self-sustaining settlements. This fight for land has generated hundreds of deaths among the peasantry. But the MST continues to grow and organize.
