The ancient Egyptians believed in numerous gods and every aspect of their lives, in this world and the Hereafter, was controlled by supernatural beings. The divinities represented the personification of order while the demons represented the forces of chaos. Temples were designed as places of power to maintain the fragile harmony of life. Only the pharaoh or his representative, the high priest, could enter the most sacred areas for fear of disturbing the perfect balance of the universe.
