The conclave in Rome lasted only one day, then white smoke came out of the chimney. On April 19, 2005, a new pope was elected: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. He took the name of Benedict XVI. He was born on April 16, 1927. He studied at the University of Munich, was ordained a priest in 1951, and was professor of theology successively in Bonn (1958), Münster (1963), Tübingen (1966) and Regensburg (1969). He published several treatises on theology, among which his Introduction to Christianity stands out (1st German edition in 1968). During the Second Vatican Council he acted as an advisor to Cardinal Frings and collaborated closely with K. Rahner in the preparation of documents against the criteria and methods of the Holy Office and in favor of the most reformist positions. In 1977 he was appointed archbishop of Munich by Paul VI. Since November 1981, when John Paul II appointed him prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he assumed several notable processes of investigation and control of orthodoxy, continued the investigation into Schillebeeckx begun in 1979 and took on the criticism of the liberation theology. After the death of John Paul II and Ratzinger being dean of the College of Cardinals, he was chosen to replace him.
