Fue Kinderszenen de Robert Schumann y Album fur die Jugend que inspiraron a Tchaikovsky para comenzar a componer su Álbum de Niños en 1878. Lo dedicó a su sobrino Vladimir Davidoff (Bobik) que tenía 7 años. Desde hace mucho tiempo me he estado diciendo a mí mismo que sería bueno contribuir, dentro de mis posibilidades, al enriquecimiento de la literatura para piano para niños, que es bastante pobre. Me gustaría componer una serie de piezas muy sencillas con atractivos títulos como Schumann hizo, escribió a su mecenas Mme von Meck. En menos de una semana de escribir estas palabras, había completado las 24 piezas de su Álbum de Niños. Al igual que las obras de Schumann, no hay nada infantil en la música, sino que muestra una mente adulta totalmente comprensiva de la visión de un niño del mundo, junto con una tierna nostalgia. El Op.39 de Tchaikovsky resultó tan popular que más tarde otros compositores rusos también compusieron obras para niños. En la época soviética, Prokofiev compuso su Música para Niños (1935), una música maravillosamente fresca muy alejada de los secos textos didácticos que la mayoría de los niños tenían para el estudio del piano. En 1947, Shostakovich compuso sus Piezas Infantiles para su hija Galina. Algo más relacionado con las piezas de enseñanza tradicionales que la Música para Niños de Prokofiev, sin embargo, inculcan de manera encantadora la noción académica de una alegre mayor y una triste menor al invertirla en una Historia Alegre en mi menor y una Historia Triste en sol mayor.
