Ernest Bloch began studying violin from an early age, then moved to Brussels to perfect himself with the great Eugène Ysaÿe. After the rise of the Nazi party, Bloch sought refuge in the United States, where he remained for the rest of his life. In his new homeland, Bloch quickly rose to popularity and was one of the first classical composers to include elements of traditional Jewish music in his works. His works based on religious themes express with great immediacy the pains and joys experienced by the Jewish people during the centuries of its long and stormy history. The program of this disc presents a series of works for violin and piano, from Sonata No. 1, a powerful work in a clearly romantic style, to the neoclassical Suite and the famous Baal Shem (Scenes from Chassidic Life) to the Abodah (Praise to the Most High), dedicated to Yehudi Menuhin. These works are presented to us in the magnificent performance of the violinist Maristella Patuzzi, who plays a magnificent Stradivarius violin. The booklet contains extensive cover notes written by the artists and their biographies. Mario Patuzzi, piano
