Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his comic opera 'May Night' in 1878-79, at a time when he was fascinated by stories of the supernatural and fantastic. Based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, for his composition Rimsky used Gogol's story practically unchanged, writing his recitatives and some of the texts for the arias.
