England, 1690. An English nobleman is sentenced to death for offending the king and is condemned to perish in the iron maiden. King Jacob II, not happy with the punishment, has the nobleman's son disfigured to create a permanent smile in order to condemn him for life to laughing at the foolishness committed by his father. Abandoned to his fate, young Gwynplaine finds the blind and orphaned Dea in the middle of a snowstorm and together they are taken in by the misanthrope Ursus. The years pass and the three go from town to town working as fairgrounds, as Ursus discovers that the morbid public is willing to pay their coins to see Gwynplaine's disfigured face. One day they will perform in front of Queen Anna, successor of the king who had their father killed. Barkhilpedro, the court jester, will discover the noble lineage of the mountebank with the perennial smile. When the Queen is informed, she orders that Gwynplaine must marry the owner of his father's possessions, Duchess Josiana, who in turn will be attracted and repelled by the face of The Man Who Laughs.
