The action takes place in 1951 when Emily Crane (Kelly McGillis), photographer editor of the prestigious Life magazine, is fired from her job for refusing to give the names of the members of the liberal organization. Despite this, Emily remains linked to leftist groups and resumes her life by starting to work as an assistant and reader for Mrs. Venable, played by Jessica Tandy.
